A holiday in Paris six years ago turned into an internship that sparked the birth of Amy's ethical fashion label, Vege Threads.  In order to work one on one with her factories, Amy made the move from Adelaide to Melbourne a few years ago and opened her first store in Northcote, Victoria last year.

We are very excited to be collaborating with Amy on a limited collection which is planned to launch in May.  Outside of our collection, we've discussed everything from her perfect day and style to her favourite saying, here’s what she had to say…

 

What are you most passionate about?

My passion is about creating meaningful work that has a positive impact.  I’ve channelled my passion for creating change into Vege Threads by aligning with organisations like Ethical Clothing Australia and 1% for the Planet. Helping people and helping the environment through responsible clothing design and production.

 

Why is Melbourne home?

Adelaide is my official home, but I’ve been based in Melbourne for three years. I moved Vege Threads production across to Melbourne and wanted to be closer to my factories and work one on one with them. It’s a great city to live in and has a very connected community, especially in the local clothing scene. Melbourne has many like-minded people and creatives and opportunity to grow, with the business but also personally. There’s a lot of great nature in Victoria, so it’s nice to have so many diverse landscapes to explore.

 

What are your favourite Melbourne hangouts?

To be honest, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve really focused on re-connecting to nature. I prefer to hang out at national parks going on bush walks or heading to the coast for a swim or surf. My partner and I spend a lot more time at home - cooking, reading and doing things slower these days.

 

How would you describe your personal style?

Practical. I like things to be conformable and made well. I’m usually just wearing jeans and a tee.

 

What is the one Denimsmith item you can’t live without and why?

The AUBREY Crop Jean has been a summer favourite. Lightweight, so soft and the fit is perfect.

 

What does your perfect day entail?

A swim in the ocean. It’s the best way to re-set for the week.

 

What is your favourite saying, song, or motto in which you live by?

I’ve always really loved this quote by Henley Thoreau:
"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

I think it always resonated with me when I started Vege Threads, that it’s ok to do your own thing or take the direction you feel is right for you, which might not be like everyone else around you, and that’s ok.
